'Fallen fruit' (1984)

by David Johnson

From the artistic estate of David Johnson, chosen by Bernadette Johnson

...In me many elements of nature, technology, society and art seek their fruitful union...

On a mild autumn day you look for fallen apples in medium-high grass. You can find them barefoot by feeling the feet rather than with the eyes. The best search form resembles the outward spiral.
At first, apples are often found, later only rarely. One becomes freer to pursue the search for one's thoughts (the actual fruit). Daydreaming remembers night dreams. The process of looking for apples is becoming more and more diffuse, more enjoyable. The search ends happily, nowhere.

As a child, I occasionally had musical/acoustic dreams. My search for a realization of these dream sounds and structures led me to work with tape, synthesizer and computer. I'm getting closer, but this search is also becoming more diffuse, more enjoyable and will happily end nowhere. In the original version of Fallobst, in addition to the electro-acoustic media, I needed slide projection and live voice and action to present the multi-layered plot more clearly and deeply.
The performance should be such a dazzle of freedom and determination...of the memorized, programmed, random and improvised...of non-professionalism and non-
dilettantism that all of these notions can finally be considered aesthetically non- objective.
